What is a Sports Guard?

Sports guards offer comprehensive protection beyond teeth, shielding braces, bridges, and dental implants while safeguarding the delicate tissues inside the mouth. An essential investment for athletes engaging in contact sports or activities prone to accidents, a personalized sports guard crafted by your dental team ensures optimal fit and maximum protection for your mouth and teeth, empowering you to pursue your passion with confidence and peace of mind.

So What Are Your Options?

Stock Sports Guards

These pre-formed guards are readily available at sporting goods stores but often lack proper fit, feeling bulky and causing discomfort during use. Athletes may find them distracting and may even remove them during play.

Boil & Bite Sports Guards

Sold in kits with instructions, boil & bite guards offer a better fit than stock guards as they mold to the teeth after boiling in water. However, they may still be uncomfortable or bulky for some users, affecting breathing and speech.

Custom Made Sports Guard

Our preferred choice for optimal protection and comfort, custom-made mouth guards are individually crafted by our team. Offering superior fit and tailored comfort, these guards ensure maximum protection during sports activities. In the rare event of discomfort, we stand ready to make necessary adjustments, prioritizing your comfort and safety.

Cost of Sports Guards in Niagara

Investing in a sports guard is an essential step towards safeguarding your oral health during athletic activities. The cost of sports guards can vary depending on the type and customization options:

  • Stock Sports Guards: Typically priced at a lower range, starting from $10 to $30, these guards offer basic protection but may lack proper fit and comfort.
  • Boil & Bite Sports Guards: Offering better fit and customization, boil & bite guards range from $20 to $50. While slightly more expensive, they provide improved comfort and protection compared to stock guards.
  • Custom-Made Mouth Guards: Our preferred choice for superior protection and comfort, custom-made mouth guards are individually crafted to fit your mouth perfectly. Prices for custom guards typically range from $100 to $300, reflecting the personalized fit and enhanced protection they offer.

Insurance Coverage

Many dental insurance plans may partially cover the cost of sports guards, especially if they are deemed medically necessary for protecting dental appliances or addressing specific oral health concerns. We recommend consulting with your insurance provider to determine your coverage options.

While the initial cost of a custom-made mouth guard may seem higher compared to stock or boil & bite guards, the value they provide in terms of superior fit, comfort, and protection justifies the price. Custom guards offer tailored comfort, optimal protection against injuries, and long-term durability, ensuring peace of mind during sports activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many dental insurance plans provide coverage for sports guards, especially if they are deemed medically necessary. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to verify coverage details.

To get fitted for a custom-made mouth guard, schedule a consultation with our dental team. During your appointment, we will take impressions of your teeth to create a personalized sports guard that offers optimal fit, comfort, and protection.

Sports guards should be cleaned regularly using a mild soap and warm water solution. Avoid using hot water or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the guard. Store your sports guard in a clean, ventilated case when not in use.

Yes, athletes with braces can wear sports guards to protect their teeth and braces from impacts during sports activities. Custom-made mouth guards offer the best fit and protection for athletes with braces.

The best type of sports guard for you depends on factors such as comfort, fit, level of protection needed, and personal preference. Our team can help you choose the most suitable option during your consultation.

I recently (again) was treated by Dr. Zapata and as always found her very friendly and professional. She always takes every precaution to make sure that her fillings (or anything else she does) fit properly and don't cause any discomfort. Even though going to the dentist is obviously not a very entertaining experience I never have to worry about experiencing pain.
