Candidates for Dentures

Did you know that nearly a quarter of adults over 65 are missing all their teeth? Dentures offer a reliable and respectable solution to tooth loss, providing a natural look and feel. In fact, you’ve likely spoken to someone with dentures without even noticing. Wondering if dentures are right for you?

To be an ideal candidate for dentures, you should:

  • Wish to replace several or all teeth: Dentures are best suited for those needing to replace multiple teeth.
  • If you’re looking to replace just one or two teeth, other options may be more suitable.
  • Avoid tobacco use: Smoking and other tobacco products can harm gum tissue and affect the fit of your dentures.
  • Have a healthy jawbone: Tooth loss can lead to jawbone thinning, which may affect the support for your dentures, particularly implant-supported ones.
  • Not experience dry mouth: Dentures can exacerbate dry mouth, making this condition more challenging to manage.
  • Commit to proper care: Maintaining your dentures requires regular cleanings, both at home and during routine checkups with your dental professional.

By meeting these criteria, dentures could be an effective restorative option for your smile!

Benefits of Dentures

Many patients in Niagara Falls love the convenience of dentures. Whether you need a full or partial set, dentures are a simple, non-invasive way to replace missing teeth—no surgery required. You can often get temporary dentures fitted right away, making it a quick and easy solution. If you’re seeking something that feels more natural, though, other cosmetic dentistry options might be a better fit.

Alternatives to Traditional Dentures

For those wanting more stability than traditional dentures, there’s a popular alternative that combines implant dentistry with dentures. This option provides a more secure fit, especially for those needing complete dentures. Dental implants are used to anchor the dentures firmly, offering added comfort and confidence.

If you’re considering this option, we can assess your gums to see if it’s a good fit for you. The process starts with an impression of your mouth to create a customized denture. Next, tiny metal posts are surgically placed under your gums to serve as anchors. This approach gives you the quick benefits of traditional dentures with the added stability of implants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dentures come in two main types: complete and partial. Complete dentures are designed to replace all of your teeth and rest directly on the gums covering the jawbones. Stability and retention can be enhanced by securing them to dental implants. Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used when some natural teeth remain. They are attached to your existing teeth and rest on the gums and bone in the areas where teeth are missing.

The cost of dentures varies based on the type you require and the complexity of your dental needs. After your first consultation, we’ll provide a personalized quote.

You’ll receive tailored aftercare instructions for your dentures, but here’s a quick overview: Always clean and massage your gums when your dentures are removed. If your toothbrush feels uncomfortable on your gums, soften it by running it under warm water or use a finger wrapped in a clean, damp cloth. For those with partial dentures, continue brushing your natural teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss daily.

It’s best to remove your dentures overnight to allow your mouth to rest. Soak them in warm water with or without a denture cleanser. If your dentures have metal clasps, stick to warm water alone, as other solutions may tarnish the metal. When not wearing your dentures, keep them in water to prevent drying out or warping. Avoid soaking them in hot water.

When you first get dentures, start with soft foods until your mouth adapts to the new fit. It’s common to experience minor irritation during this period. Gradually, as you become accustomed to your dentures, reintroduce a wider variety of foods. Use utensils to assist with cutting food, chew slowly using your back teeth, and consider using a small amount of denture adhesive for added security. For a more stable fit, you may wish to explore implant-supported dentures.

Your comfort and well-being are our priority. Depending on your situation, a denture treatment plan may involve tooth extractions or preparatory dental surgery. Our team ensures that all procedures are performed accurately and precisely, aiming for a swift recovery with minimal discomfort. Sedation options are also available to help manage any anxiety or discomfort.

I recently (again) was treated by Dr. Zapata and as always found her very friendly and professional. She always takes every precaution to make sure that her fillings (or anything else she does) fit properly and don't cause any discomfort. Even though going to the dentist is obviously not a very entertaining experience I never have to worry about experiencing pain.
